Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be a vehicle for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught her to say something through the arts. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of one member of the jury, and then go through their garbage. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
